A friend of mine posted a Twitter post about how 1 cow requires 1500 gallons of water. That is a lot of water. An interesting idea to save water...eat less beef. However when I was writing this book, in my research I found out some important considerations on this concept.
if the world stopped eating beef, there would be more starvation. The
stress it would put on the vegetable, grains, and fruit industry would
be too great. The result would be that the price of those items would
go up, people with money would afford it, and it would have
a devastating trickle down effect. Third world countries' citizens
would feel the brunt as they would be priced out of that market, thus
leading to mass starvation of the poor.
Good idea in concept,
but if you really want to save water, kill your golf course instead.
Set in the desert of Dubai, the Tiger Woods Golf Course uses 4 million
gallons of water every day to maintain its lush appearance.
If
you shorten your showers by just a single minute, you can save
approximately 700 gallons of water in a month. So I figure I eat way
less than 1 whole cow every 2 months so I am in the positive water
saving category.
